This Blog is on Sarvodaya – Welfare of All, a vision of a non-exploitative social order. It is devoted to Gandhian Philosophy, Movement, Constructive Work and Gram Swaraj. This is a humble effort to present Gandhi’s vision of Truth and Nonviolence as the foundations of society, Swaraj(Self-rule through enlightenment) for people, Swadeshi (promote local economy and good neighbourhood) and Satyagraha(Non-violent resistance to injustice)which are the components of Sarvodaya.

Gandhi to Jails – Open Air Jail Cherlapally

A program was organized to take the message of Mahatma Gandhi to the inmates of Open Air Jail, Cherlapally, Hyderabad on Saturday, 13 July, 2013. Sri K.V. Reddy, Superintendent of the Jail, Sri Rajender, Jailor and other Prison Authorities arranged the program. Prasanthi, Sriram Rahi, Madhava Reddy coordinated the programme.

Sri Prasad, Dr. Kranthi, Nisar Ahmed, Amarnath and others participated in the visit and addressing the inmates. The Prison authorities gave a conducted tour of the Open Air Jail to the visitors. The jail has about 120 inmates who work in the agricultural farm, producing vegetables, fruits, milk and other agricultural produce. They have a petrol bunk run by the inmates of the Prison.

Sri Prasad was associated with the Three-Month Certificate Course on Mahatma Gandhi’s Life and Thought organized in Central Prison, Rajahmundry, East Godavari District. Five such courses were conducted in that Prison. A documentary film was made on this effort which recorded the impact and transformation of inmates of the prison through Gandhian values.

Some of the inmates of Rajahmundry prison were transferred to Cherlapally and hence they are aware of the course and its contents. This made the process to reach the inmates easy.

Sri Prasad said that Prison life should be taken as an opportunity to develop skills and attitudes for future. This would help them develop their personalities and become ‘Sarvodaya Karyakarthas’ and work for a better society.

Dr. Kranthi, Sriram Rahi, Nisar Ahmed, Amarnath addressed the Meeting.

Open Air Jail, called, Prisoners’ Agricultural Colony, Cherlapalli.

The inmates work on the farm – in various agricultural activities – ploughing, irrigating, harvesting, transporting, selling etc.
